Chapter Nine Glacier Bay appeared off the stern of the ship. Dressed warmly in their jackets and jeans, Brodie moved to the rail to get a closer look. A mass of people were photographing and videotaping the sight. An ice floe, aqua blue in color, had oozed its way between two mountainsides. It was thick, slick and appeared ancient, as if it were as old as the earth under it.
Stuffing his cold hands into his pockets, Brodie leaned against Julian. "It's really amazing."
"I know. Someone said if a chunk falls off into the sea it's called calving. How weird is that?"
"No. Really?"
Julian shrugged. "I thought that's what I heard."
"I thought with this global warming, chunks were supposedly falling off all over."
"It's not the arctic, Brodie, maybe it doesn't happen here."
"Weren't there supposed to be whales here too?"
"I really have no clue. I feel like I've been preoccupied."
Brodie caught his wink. "Ya think?"
"Duh!" Julian laughed. "Too much sex has turned me into an idiot."
"You losing brain cells in that delicious sperm of yours?"
"Shh! You dirty boy!" Julian looked around them.
"You have no idea."
"Yeah?" Julian's interest perked up. "Got a kinky streak in you? Mr. Mild Mannered Microsoftman?"
"That's for you to find out." Brodie grinned wickedly.
"Christ, either you're giving me the chills, or it's freezing out here." Julian hopped up and down.
"Both, hopefully." Brodie looked back at the glacier as they drew closer. "Shouldn't there be penguins on it?"
"I have no clue."
"You'd think someone would tell us something about it."
"They did mention some naturalist was going to be here. I can't recall. My brain is fried from too much sex."
Brodie started laughing. "Is that your new excuse for everything?"
"Yes. Why? Doesn't it work for you?"
"Brodie!"
They turned around to see Glenda and Marlene waving at them. Brodie asked, "Should we mention you'll be at our table tonight?"
"Shit. I don't know."
The women rushed up to them excitedly. "Isn't it cool!" Marlene shouted, a camera in her hand.
"Cool!" Brodie rubbed his hands together. "It's freezing."
"I didn't mean that. Hi, Julian."
"You remembered my name." Julian smiled.
"Of course!"
Glenda held up her camera lens at them. "Can I take one of you guys in front of the glacier?"
Brodie was about to nod agreeably when Julian gripped him around the shoulder and pulled him tight to his body.
"Say cheese!" Glenda giggled, just as Marlene took the same shot.
"Got it!"
"You want me to take one of you two?" Brodie offered.
Glenda handed him her camera. As he looked down at it to figure out how it worked, Marlene asked Julian to do the same for her.
The women stood side by side, smiles plastered on their faces. "Say cheese," Brodie sang, clicking the shutter. Hearing Julian mumbling, "How do I work this thing?" Brodie leaned over to have a look. "Push that button once you find them in that screen."
"Oh, duh."
Out of the corner of his mouth, Brodie whispered, "Too much sex, I know."
Trying not to laugh, Julian yelled, "Hang on! Almost there! Smile!" He took the picture, looking down at the frozen frame.
